Formal organizations have evolved greatly over the last century because of the advancement in technology, and an overall higher level of education within today's workforce. With today's ever changing society, changes within any organization are going to shift to meet the demands of today's consumers. With the speed of progress increasing, and the demands of today's consumers ever changing. Changes within today's organizations need to be acknowledged, accepted, and finally implemented.

With the steady evolution of formal organizations in the last century. Formal organizations have transformed from a traditional family based value system of organization, into a more streamlined modern organizational system. With the integration of modern flexible organizational structure, formal organizations have become more profitable. Employees of these more modern flexible organizational structures typically earn higher wages, and consumers reap the rewards of lower priced products.

Formal organizations that where developed a century ago where developed and ran by an elite hierarchy.

This chain of command consisted of a CEO, with a select few top executives, some middle management, and many workers/laborers. All of the positions in this type of structure, from the top CEO down to each laborer, where extremely defined with specific rules and guidelines that where adhered to. The efficiency of these groups where believed to be obtained through the carful hiring process. Careful selection was strictly adhered to when hiring an individual to fill a specific position. Each member of this formal organizational structure where hired to perform a specific position without deviance from that position. From the supervisors who oversaw the workers under them, to the mail runner who delivered inner office memos throughout the company.
