Richard ClarkNANT3655Experiences PaperMay 7, 2008For my topic of my paper I have chosen to write about the homosexual and the association of feminity to this label. I was born gay and I have struggled with this very stereotype and categorization all my life. I would like to share a few brief moments in my life to paint a clear picture of what my life has been like and why I felt so compelled to write about this particular subject. In this Anthropology course, (Names, Labels and Categories) that I am taking at the New School University I have studied several different types of peoples and that which is considered the abnormal. To say that I am abnormal would be a good start. I suppose that anyone can identify as abnormal because there is no real clear definition of that is I found myself very connected to some of the readings and at some points even like the readings could have been written about me.

I have even struggled with the way to discuss the topics of each reading without adding in too much of my own feelings on the matter and making it more about winning an argument situation, than looking at something and having a scientific discussion.

One issue in particular that I feel very connected to is the “Self Forfilling Prophecy.” This is a term that was made famous by Robert Merton. In his article he confronts the issue society has with labels and categories starting with the false belief in something.
