The investigation assesses to what extent can we trust the figure of victims of Nanking massacre in "The Rape of Nanking -the forgotten holocaust of World War"? Which written by Chinese-American, Iris Chang.

"The Rape of Nanking -the forgotten holocaust of World War" is a book written about Nanjing Massacre which took place approximately from 1937 December to 1938 February during Sino-Japanese War. According to this book, Japanese army killed more than 300,000 Chinese citizens. In order to evaluate a number of victims of Nanjing massacre in "the Rape of Nanking -the forgotten holocaust of World War Ⅱ", the investigation evaluates Iris Chang's "the Rape of Nanking -the forgotten holocaust of World War Ⅱ" and Masaaki Tanaka's WhatReallyHappenedinNanking the refutation of a common myth (the original title: ) then evaluated for their origins, purposes, values, and limitations.

From these sources, both points of view are considered and their arguments on the numbere of victims of Nanking Massacre are analyzed.

B: Summary of evidence

On December 13, 1937 Japanese troops occupied Nanking , the capital city of Republic of China and after the next six weeks, they apparently commited numerous slaughter, such as arson, rape, looting and the execution of prisoners of war (POW). This is called Nanking Massacre. However, there are still arguments between Japanese and Chinese historians about the number of victims of the Nanking Massacre.

Most of Japanese historians claim that the victims are lees than 100,000 but in China, the number of 300,000~400,000 victims are commonly used.
