Over the past century many people in the United States have faced some form of discrimination. It started with African-Americans seeking an end to slavery. Then, women wanted to join the workforce and received controversy. Women also campaigned for universal suffrage including the right to vote. Now, the issue is that homosexuals are seeking equal rights and protection that other groups have. (Robinson) A man by the name of Ernest Gaines once asked "Why is it that, as a culture, we are more comfortable seeing two men holding guns than holding hands?" (Robinson) That is a question that demonstrates the struggle in today's society known as homosexual discrimination.

Discrimination can be defined as unfair treatment against a person or group on the basis of prejudice. ("Discrimination") Prejudice is a predetermined judgment of a person or group without the education or knowledge needed to support the judgment. ("Prejudice") Furthermore, sexual orientation discrimination or homosexual discrimination is discrimination against individuals, couples, or groups based on apparent or real sexual orientation.

This type of discrimination involves people that see themselves as gay, lesbian, bisexual or transgender. An important acronym to know is LGBT, which stands for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender. ("Homosexuality")

Throughout history there have been LGBT discriminations and it continues to be a topic of heated debate across the world especially politically and religiously. Currently throughout the world, many countries have deemed this type of discrimination illegal. In the United States, seventeen states have also banned discrimination of this type. ("Discrimination") However, at the federal level, sexual orientation discrimination has not been banned because homosexuals are not allowed to marry or form civil unions of some sort.
