What do I need to know?

Before a learned starts the course several areas need to be identified to establish whether the learner is suitable for the course or indeed if the course is suitable for the participant.

Age, level of experience, progression, financial situation, location, manual dexterity and number of students in class are the main core of questions that need to be addressed.

These questions arise due to a number of issues, for example; if you have a learner who is considerably older than the rest of the group you would have to question the motivation of this learner and their intended progression route. It may turn out that their reason for wanting to take the course may be for a leisure activity or personal use rather than an intended career path. Therefore the level of teaching would not need to be the same as a younger learner who whishes to develop their skills to take them

into employment.

My current learners...

The groups I teach at the moment are all around the same age, from the same socio -economic grouping, and at the same educated level. They are here because they want to take their education to degree level and need to gain certain skills and qualifications or because they want employment in a skilled environment. The majority of the group is male and I have one learner with special needs.

I came to the group at the half way point of their final year and therefore had only a short space of time to evaluate their needs and put into practice a structure that would suit them.
