Objectives for Field Experiences:

1.broaden the base of professional training for teacher candidates, providing greater depth in preparation;

2.provide opportunities to see school from the vantage point of a teacher so that their academic work in courses becomes realistic rather than purely theoretical;

3.assist teacher candidates in determining deficiencies in their own academic preparation;

4.assist teacher candidates in determining through a self-screening process whether they are suited to and interested in becoming teachers before it is too late to change career-college plans; and,

5.provide a motivational factor to public school students to continue their education by providing a role model who is engaged in educational and self-improvements with which they can identify.

RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE TEACHER CANDIDATE:

1.scheduling visits to the classroom with the cooperating teacher;

2.providing their own transportation;

3.notifying the principal/teacher prior to an absence;

4.maintaining a professional appearance and attitude;

5.maintaining a field experience log and conducting structured observations; and,

6. submitting written assignments related to the field experience.

RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE COOPERATING TEACHER:

1.remaining in the classroom while teacher candidate is there;

2.providing opportunities for the teacher candidate to plan and engage in a variety of instructional and institutional activities;

3.reporting to the principal/college professor any problems that appear to be non-negotiable;

4.signing and returning the teacher candidate's time log;

5.discussing the field experience and observations with the teacher candidate; and,

6.completing and returning the evaluation.

RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE PRINCIPAL:

1.determining the number of teacher candidates his/her school will accommodate, and

2.selecting the cooperating teachers.

RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE COURSE PROFESSOR:

1.providing a sound theoretical base in professional education;

2.monitoring field placement observations;

3. evaluating written observation assignments;

4.providing opportunities for in class discussion of field experience; and,

5.assigning the final course grade.
