Forbidden Island

Reflection Paper

Background

When our group was randomly assigned, by chance, three of our members were already working closely together on an intense project in another class. Luckily, they had already had positive relationships and myself and the other new member fit right in. The result was a significant kick-start, and we were able to maintain the momentum through to completion. Overall our experience working together as group was a positive one, with great group dynamics, and we were happy to be able to work together again.

Pre-game strategy

The game rules for Forbidden Island are lengthy and somewhat confusing at first read. Even though each of us had read the rules ahead of time, I suggested we quickly go through once more to refresh our memories, and ensure each player had a clear understanding. Together, Sandra and I started going through the rules as Andrew, Andrew and David listened.

We made it about halfway through the rules when Andrew insisted that we just start playing and figure it out along the way. I admit the rules were not much clearer this time around, so we agreed to start playing.

Andrew dealt the cards to each of the players face down. Everyone's natural instinct was to protect their cards, so we each secretly checked our cards. None of us had played a cooperative board game before and it was clear we had not grasped exactly what it meant to play cooperatively. I double checked the rules and told everyone we were supposed to share our cards with each other. Andrew gave me a very skeptical look, as if I was trying to trick him. In order to reassure him, I showed him the rules and he then proceeded to flip his cards over.
