The government gives American citizens certain freedoms such as political freedom, academic freedom, social freedom and emotional freedom that you achieve by using other freedoms. Freedom is the state of being free unrestricted and unconfined. Political freedom is the right, or the capacity, of self determination as an expression of the individual will. Academic freedom is the freedom of teachers, students, and academic institutions to pursue knowledge wherever it may lead, without undue or unreasonable interference. Emotional freedom the ability to participate in the world. The government gives Americans political and academic freedom but an American must achieve their own emotional freedom. In order to achieve emotional freedom an American must know how to read and write. A person cannot participate in the world without knowing how to read or right.

The road to freedom is through knowledge because knowledge is power according to Frederick Douglass(1845). The French philosopher Jean-Jacques Rousseau said a man is born free and everywhere is in chains.

Which means a man is born without restriction but with every place he goes there is a lose of freedom. Another man who spoke on freedom is probably one of the most famous black men ever to live, Martin Luther King Jr. In his famous "I have a dream" speech Mr. King quotes the bible saying "Free at last! Free at last! Thank God Almighty we are at last free!" A Roman man once said "freedom is the participation in power" Cicero. The earliest known written symbol representing the idea of freedom came from the a Sumerian cuneiform word ama-gi. All these people and ideas contributed to the main idea of freedom.
