Functions of Management

"Management is the process of working with people and resources to accomplish organizational goals (Bateman and Snell, 2004). Managers in today's business world have to learn to adapt to change at a fast pace. Technology causes the way businesses are run constantly. Whether a business is global, through the internet, or a small business, the competition is always looking for a way to get ahead. Although adaptation and change is necessary, the basic functions of management have remained the same. Effective managers must be able to plan, organize, lead, and control.

The art of planning entails setting goals, looking to the future of the company, and executing a plan of action that will ensure an outcome that accomplishes the company's goals. When setting goals, the manager must analyze current and future situations.

He or she must know the business strategies that are best for the organization, what resources are needed to run the business, and in what types of activities the business will be involved (Bateman and Snell, 2004).

The days when executives sat in their offices shouting orders are coming to an end. The business world has realized that it is more effective for everyone in an office setting to contribute to the work. Executives and employees must get together and come up with new and innovative ideas. New products are coming out on a daily basis along with the technological advances that are moving at lightning speed. A business that collaborates to quickly bring out new, quality products will have more of a chance of being successful.
