Many people wonder what their managers jobs are. People may assume that their managers are not doing anything but getting paid. Their managers have nice offices, work on their own schedule, and just give rules. But managers have several task. People may ask what are the functions of a manager? There are four functions of a manager, which includes planning, organizing, leading and controlling. Working at Aqua America, Inc. I get to see all the functions of a manager being used.

Aqua America, Inc. is the nation’s largest U.S.-based, publicly-traded water company, providing water and wastewater services to approximately 2.8 million residents in Pennsylvania, Ohio, Illinois, Texas, New Jersey, Indiana, Virginia, Florida, North Carolina, Maine, Missouri, New York and South Carolina. Aqua America also provides water and wastewater consulting and contract operations and management services to selected clients.

Aqua has several managers in many different departments but they all follow the same functions such as, planning, organizing leading and controlling but they use these functions in many different ways.

Planning is the main function of a manager. Planning is specifying the goals to be achieved and deciding in advance the appropriate actions needed to achieve those goals.(Bateman & Snell, 2007) At Aqua America is taking over different states every couple of months. The managers have to know all the laws that are set by the Public Utility Commission for each state, so that there will not be any lawsuits. Since each state has different rules and regulations. The managers have to make sure that all the customers previous information is putinto one system. The managers also have to make all the phone lines connect to each call center in each state.
