Functions of Management

Functions of Management in today's business world, managers follow certain rules that help them be better at their job and also contribute to the success of the business. The functions of management are established to help managers see the business operations with more clarity and understanding. A manager's role is to lead his/her organization to a clearly stated objective. In doing so he/she must muster all his resources in a concise and organized attempt at achieving those goals. Management is creative problem solving. This creative problem solving is accomplished through four functions of management: planning, organizing, leading and controlling (Table 1). The intended result is the use of an organization's resources in a way that accomplishes its mission and objectives. The four functions of management are essential to building strong teams and stronger organizations. In this paper we will be examining all four of these ingredients and then we will apply them to a real world scenario.

These four things are used any time when initiating a new project or dealing with an existing one.

Common sense tells us that we do our best work when we know what we are trying to accomplish. Thus, the supervisor's job includes determining the department's goals and the way to meet them. This is the function of planning. Sometimes a supervisor has a substantial say in determining the goals themselves, while another supervisor must focus his or her efforts on how to achieve goals set by higher-level managers. As mentioned earlier, the supervisor's job is to help the organization meet its goals. Organizational goals are the results of planning by top managers. The purpose of planning by supervisors, then, is to determine how the department can contribute to achieving the organization's goals. This includes planning how much money to spend-and,
