General Ulysses Simpson Grant is an important part of this countries war between the north and south. I am writing a biography about this important union General to document his work. Ulysses Simpson Grant was born on April 22, 1822, in Point Pleasant, Clermont County, Ohio around twenty-five miles away from the Ohio River. Grants birth name was Hiram Ulysses Grant her maiden name was Simpson which after she got married it became her middle name. His childhood nick name was "Ulys". His fathers name is Jesse R. Grant he is a tanner. His mothers name is Hannah Simpson Grant. His father and mother were both born in Pennsylvania. In the fall of 1823 they moved to the village of Georgetown in Brown County, Ohio, where Grant spent most of his time until he was seventeen. At the age of seventeen Grant was appointed to the United States Military Academy at West Point though congressman Thomas Hamer.

He graduated twenty-one out of thirty-seven in 1843. Grant was in many battles. One battle that Grant was in was the Battle of Shiloh. This Battle of Shiloh was also called Pittsburgh Landing. This battle lasted from April 6, 1862 to April 7, 1862. The Battle of Shiloh took place in Hardin County, Tennessee. During this battle The Confederate Army of Mississippi attacked two separate Union Armies. They attacked The Union Armies from Tennessee and Ohio. The Confederates had almost four-five thousand soldiers. The Union Armies had over sixty-five thousand soldiers. So, the Union had an advantage with more soldiers and a better general. During this short battle there was many attacks and counterattacks between the Union and Confederate armies. General Albert S. Johnston was the head general of the Confederate Army.
