Washington helped shape the U.S in three important ways. First, he commanded the continental army that won American Independence from Great Britain in the Revolutionary War. Second, Washington served as president of the convention that wrote the U.S constitution. Third, he was elected the first president of the U.S. Taking office Apr. 30, 1789 in New York Washington acted carefully and deliberately, aware of the need to build and executive structure that could accommodate future presidents. Only 11 states made up the U.S when Washington became the new nationâ??s first president. Five more states joined the Union during Washingtonâ??s presidency. He was reelected president in 1792. Washingtonâ??s appearance caused admiration and respect. By March 1797, when Washington left the office, the countryâ??s financial system was well established.

George Washington was born in Westmoreland County, Va., on February 22, 1732. He was the eldest son of Augustine Washington and his second wife, Mary Ball Washington. Throughout his childhood life Washington went through many struggles, like the death of his father in 1743 and tragedy struck the young men again with the death of his half brother Lawrence, who had guided and mentored George after his fatherâ??s death.
