The Giver By Lois Lowry
The name of the book I read is "The Giver" by Lois Lowry. Another book she wrote is "Number the Stars". The books she writes are so descriptive you feel like you are right there next to the characters. Even thought she only gives minor details as to what the characters look like, you can easily put a face to them. Her books are fiction, but they all seem so real.
The Giver is about a 12 year old boy named Jonas. In his community, everyone is assigned jobs, at 12 years old, which are specially picked for them. They community is designed so that everything is always going the way it is supposed to be. Jonas is picked to be the Receiver of Memory. He receives memories from the past back before their community even existed. Not all the memories are good, but the get Jonas thinking about the outside world where everything is not always perfect.
I chose this book because I heard from many people that it was a good read. Also, it was one of the best sellers on Amazon.com and I thought that it must be pretty good. I'm glad I read this book because it was really good.
Jonas is intelligent and generous. He tries his best to be good and obedient. He has courage and integrity. These qualities are why he is chosen to be The Receiver of Memory. After he receives his instructions he is allowed to lie and be rude, but he chooses not to, until he absolutely needs to. Throughout the story you can see how Jonas becomes more aware of the outside world. He becomes more independent and more courageous.
The story takes place in a closed community. The community is...
