To what extent did the recommendations of the RCIADIC propose new challenges for government? Did Indigenous activists support the recommendations of the RCIADIC?IntroductionIndigenous deaths in custody has formulated as a major issue in Australia concerning the not always peaceful relationship between Australians and Aborigines. The motive of the issue is the simple fact that unreasonably large number of Aboriginal Australians died in prison and in police lockups compared to non-Aboriginal prisoners. Around the 1980s an overall concern started to spread, which resulted in the belief that the Aboriginal deaths were caused by the non-aboriginal authorities carried out either directly or in a circuitous way. As the public concern rose both among Indigenous and non-indigenous people, the Royal Commission into Aboriginal Death in Custody (RCIADC) was established in 1987 and started an investigation to solve the case. (Australian Social Trends, 2005)Between 1987 and 1991 the Commission studied and investigated 99 Aboriginal deaths in custody and produced a report containing 339 recommendations corresponding to actions regarding the deaths in custody.
