Abstract

This week a Republican congressman has proposed a report-cards-for-welfare legislation that would be too costly to implement, would have a rebounding effect on the whole family and school personnel, and would completely ignore the innate ability of children. This legislation would base the amount of welfare a family receives on children's' grades. This bill would require more government employees for both the school district and the welfare office. Then, welfare employees would have to verify report cards and determine payouts based on grades. While there are parents receiving welfare who could be more involved in their children's education, this legislation would punish undeserving family members and teachers. Even if parents became more involved in their children's education, this legislation completely ignores the innate ability of children. Alternately, children should be judged on effort.
