The novel "The Great Gatsby" by F. Scott Fitzgerald is a novel that depicts the shallowness of life. The American Dream is a large part of Fitzgerald novel. The American Dream involves being wealthy, which wouldn't cause you to have to think about any others things because money could attain everything in life, but the American Dream also has to involve a persons physical and spiritual strength. In Fitzgeralds' novel the characters thoroughly corrupt the meaning of the "American Dream" as a result of their lack of morals and ethics.
Daisy is one of the characters that exemplifies the theme of destruction of the American Dream. Daisy is a round character in the novel causing her to have many personalities. Earlier in the book, she is portrayed as sweet and innocent. Her white and dress appeals to Nick in this way. She grew up as "the most popular of all the young girls in Louisville."

Daisy asks Nick if the people in Louisville talk about her and miss her. This shows that Daisy is extremely materialistic and only cares about what people think. She never asked about how the people she had lived with and spoke with were feeling but she asked what people said about her. Daisy represents a materialistic young girl that has mind of her own. Daisy rediscovers her love with Gatsby because of his "nice shirts" , "large house", and his wealth . "They're such beautiful shirts, " she sobbed, her voice muffled in the thick folds. Daisy lived in a wealthy background her whole life. She grew up with all of the best.
Azra When Gatsby didn't contact Daisy because he wasn't wealthy enough for her she went off and married another man, only because " Rich girls don't marry poor boys" Daisy was brought up that way therefore she wouldn't even think twice about Gatsby since he was poor. Daisy never cared about how other people felt she only cared about herself. " I've got something to tell you, old sport- " began Gatsby. But Daisy guessed at his intention. " Please don't!" she interrupted helplessly." Please let's all go home. Why don't we all go home?" " That's a good idea." I got up. " Come on, Tom. Nobody wants a drink." In the hotel room the scene full of emotion Daisy forbids Gatsby to speak about their affair and how Daisy really loved Gatsby and not Tom, when Daisy heard those words come out of Gatsby's mouth she went crazy she didn't want her "perfect" life get ruined by this imperfection of having an affair with another man. Daisy tries to change the subject and try to leave to run away from the problem and not take it like responsible- sible adult because Daisy never knew how to take care of such problems in life. These round characteristics of Daisy complicate the plot and the corruption of the American Dream.
Tom well as Daisy is another character who destroys the meaning of the "American Dream ". Tom is hypocritical and has very large hubris. Tom has no morals about his affair with Myrtle, but when he starts to suspect Daisy and Gatsby of having an affair, he becomes very mad. Tom controls Daisy like she is his play toy, and its immoral of Tom to do to his wife. Tom has an affair with Myrtle, George's wife and makes no effort to hide it from Daisy. He treated Myrtle even worse then he treated Daisy. "I'll say it whenever I want to!.......Making a short deft of movement Tom Buchanan broke her nose with his open hand.
Azra Even though he is having an affair, he still bursts when he finds out about the affair between Gatsby and Daisy. Tom is a very immoral character. He doesn't worry about anyone but himself. Tom not only doesn't care about others but he creates a death to occur because of his lack of caring for people around him; The death of Gatsby. Tom only cares about getting what he wants, and doesn't care who he takes down in the with him. The relationship between Tom and Daisy were clearly for money and relationships that are kept together with money are superficial. "Neither of them can stand the person they're married to" . The binding of a marriage has become very weak when Daisy "had told Gatsby that she loved him, and Tom Buchanan saw. He was astounded". Gatsby obviously agrees that the marriages rarely represent true love, but Gatsby now is entrapped with all the superficiality of the rich and famous. Gatsby loses all sense of family. His wealth has become his "family". Tom is very much immune to these qualities he doesn't create a chaos, he just leaves to go home and start life like nothing had happened. Tom is the epitome of shallowness. He had no morals and thinks that walking away from problems wouldn't cause any damage to ones life or future. Thus, Tom created much chaos in Mr. Wilson's life, in Daisy, Nick, and Gatsby. Tom showed no remorse to any of the characters lives he twisted. Again not fulfilling the implements of the "American Dream".
In conclusion there is an extreme lack of spiritual and physical sides of Daisy and Tom . Becoming rich destroyed for Daisy and Tom the ability to Love each other and others as well. They portray the failure of the American Dream in that people believe wealth is everything. The world cannot function on materialism , it needs true spirituality to compact all.
