How have the texts you have studied this year effectively shaped your understanding of 'the journey'?

Journeys move people from one state to another, creating significant impact on the introspective facets of each human being. The destination that we arrive at, at times exemplifies the inner change that occurs. However, it is the journey that creates and shapes our inner qualities and finishing state of self. The goals we achieve are a result of the journey of our inner self, in which we change and develop to our finishing state. The three texts studied this year, 'Empire of the Sun', 'Journey to the Interior', and 'Girl, Interrupted' have been highly effective texts in shaping my understanding of the concept of journey. This has been achieved by the variety and quality of techniques used by three individual composers.

The novel 'Empire of the Sun', by J.G. Ballard, has enhanced my understanding of 'the journey' by using an omniscient author and descriptive language. The use of a third person narrative allows the audience to see many individual views and appreciations of the inner journey made by the protagonist of the film, Jim.

Jim's journey of self-growth is brought to life through the narration, which takes into consideration the perspectives of many influential characters. The all-knowing author allows the audience to see not only how Jim is feeling, but how the other characters (Basie, DR Ransome, Mr Maxted) are feeling also. This technique communicates to the audience how the other characters have influenced Jim's inner journey, and has demonstrated to me how outside influences can have a large effect on ones journey. Two major influences on Jim are Basie and DR Ransome, with Basie teaching Jim to become a survivor and DR Ransome teaching Jim the morals needed for life.
