Character Analysis

In the story of " the Chrysthemums," Elisa Allen is a thirty five years old woman who lives with her husband Henry in the Salinas Valley. She is hard working person and underappreciated. In story, some characters are complex enough to arouse the emotion and characteristics. Elisa Allen is a woman who has been feeling trapped and frustrated with her life.

Elisa Allen is an compelling, bright, and emotional woman that appears in the story. John Steinbeck praises " Her face was lean and strong and her eyes were as clear as water" (229). Looking at this appearance, she seems that she is mentally energetic in every part of her life and has a very pure soul of heart. While she was working in garden, she wears heavy gardening costume and which makes her figure looked more like a man. According to John Steinbeck, John states that her appearance was enthusiastic and responsible and attractive, even her effort with scissors was impatient and clobber (2229).

This statement shows that working in garden was too small and easy for her energy.

As comparing to the another character in "The story of an hour, " Louise Mallard is a young age woman who was afflicated with a heart trouble. She is an brilliant, independent woman and knows a right way for a woman to behave. Kate Chopin praises" she was young, with a fair, calm face, Whose lines bespoke repression and even a certain strength" (169). Looking at this quote, it seems that Louise Mallard and Elisa Allen has similar personality traits that reveals in the story.
