Maturing to her true Identity

In his short story "Hills Like White Elephants", Ernest Hemingway creates a story of a couple of an unnamed protagonist called the Girl and antagonist affectionately name The American. The story is set in the Roaring 20's, during the 1920's everyone in the Western world was enjoying a life of luxury and excess of material goods. The characters are a part of what was known as the "The Lost Generation", who were the disenchanted group of young people who were caught between the two world wars. Many young people were traveling around Europe drinking, partying, and having several sexual partners. The majority of the story is dialogue that is discussing what one could appears to be the fate of their relationship and aborting their baby. Despite in the beginning the girl expresses she will do anything to keep the relationship with the American; until she starts to notice his deceitful manipulation, she finally decides to have mature decisions.

The character the American can be described as manipulative man who trying convince his girlfriend to abort the baby. It can be assumed that the American is veteran of World War I, who decided to stay behind in Europe after the war ended. He had become accustomed to the party life of drinking and sleeping around. From the life that has been describe it could be assumed that he is not ready to change his life for a baby, so it would be imperative that he would want for his girlfriend to have an abortion. When reading the dialogue it can be seen that he has made up his mind on not having a child.

The American uses simple but clever manipulation to persuade her into the abortion. When describing the procedure he states, "It's...
