'I'd watch out dear,' warned the elderly woman. Her eyes slanted with concern behind her glasses and her creased forehead glowered at her young grandson's response.

'Grandma, you know I can make the trip back to Summerville by myself every Thursday evening. I can look after myself just as well as a man.'

'It's just, it's only...'

'Don't worry grandma,' reassured Hale. He knew how much his grandmother meant to him, especially after his mother had been brutally murdered. Leaning over the table, Hale peered into the old woman's eyes; a familiar gleam of sadness was visible.

'So, I'll see you next week. If you need anything, don't be scared to contact me any time. Umm... and here's my new mobile number... just in case.'

'Where would I be without you?' The old woman chuckled. 'Drive safely and watch out for...'

'...Stray dogs, bumps and crazy drivers. I know, Grandma!'

The night lay still as Hale clambered into his ute, its mustard green paint barely visible beneath the scratches, bugs and dits which coated the vehicle.

It was no easy feat handling the pothole ridden country roads, let alone his grandmother's overgrown driveway.

Hale was soon rumbling down the dusty, beaten track. Pulling out onto the main road, Hale felt lonely within. He longed for someone to whom he could chat with as he drove along the seemingly endless roads. He flicked on the heater and rested his palm on the gearstick with a sigh.

A seemingly endless hour of driving had finally begun to make his mind wander, so he decided to put the radio on. It was obvious that the dusty buttons had been neglected for quite some time. With light rock music humming through the car, Hale felt at ease.

Once again his thoughts turned to other...
