Huffman Trucking Operating Systems Overview

Huffman Trucking is a national transportation company. The company's logistical hubs are located in Los Angeles, California, St. Louis, Missouri, and Bayonne, New Jersey. Its central maintenance facility is in Cleveland, Ohio (Apollo Group, Inc, 2005). Most of the operating systems (OS) used at the four Huffman Trucking offices are Windows based utilizing Windows XP Pro, Windows 2000 Pro, Windows 98, Windows 95, and Windows 3.1. The Ohio and Missouri offices use Mac OS X as well. Huffman manages its network by utilizing Windows NT Server and Novell Netware 4.11 OS's on its servers. Lotus Notes and Microsoft Exchange are used to access business e-mail, calendars and applications. The Ohio and Missouri offices use Lotus Notes and California and New Jersey use Microsoft Exchange for their email service.

Huffman Trucking is using the Windows XP Pro operating system on 20 workstations in Ohio facilities and 10 workstations in Missouri.

Huffman uses Windows 2000 Pro operating system on 30 workstations at the Missouri and Ohio facilities (Apollo Group, Inc., 2004). This operating system is primarily geared towards business users and it is a predecessor for Windows XP. Huffman Trucking uses Windows 95 and Windows 98 operating systems on 2 workstations in California and 20 workstations at New Jersey facility (Apollo Group, Inc., 2004). Huffman also utilizes Windows 3.1 at the California and New Jersey sites. The key reason to use these operating systems is the hardware limitations. The systems with Pentium PII processor cannot run Windows 2000 Pro or Windows XP Pro without impeding user's productivity. Mac OS X is Apple's operating system built on a UNIX foundation.
