Michelangelo

Michelangelo Buonarroti was born on March 6, 1475, in a small village of Caprese. He grew up in Florence, a center of the early Renaissance movement. His dad sent him to school with hopes that he would become a great scholar. But Michelangelo was more fascinated with art. His family members were unhappy that he wanted to be an artist. However, in 1488 they finally agreed to let him study art. At the age of 13, he became an artist's apprentice to Ghirlandaio, where he learned the art of fresco painting. Even though Michelangelo was 13, he was highly skilled.

Demonstrating obvious talent, he was taken under the wing of Lorenzo de' Medici. Lorenzo was most known for his involvement in the art world. He lived with Lorenzo for 2 years and there he met many great men. In Rome he carved the first of his major works, the Pieta.

Michelangelo's Pieta made his name known, and he returned to Florence a famous sculptor. He also stated that he "felt an almost religious calling to sculpt, to unveil the spiritual significance of physical beauty". Michelangelo was not only known for his paintings and sculpting, but he was also a poet, architect and engineer.

Michelangelo's painting, The Last Judgment, took four years to complete. The main figure in this work of art is Christ, who is painted as powerful and broad. This painting illustrates the ending of the world where the judgment is to going to be held in front of Christ. In the artwork Christ is a judge; on the left of Christ are people condemned to eternal fire, as he raises those on the right to join the companionship of angels, saints, as well as the Blessed Virgin...
