The Hurt Man

The short story "The Hurt Man" is written by Wendell Berry. The short story is about a 5 year old boy named Matt Feltner and his childhood in 1888. He lives in a town called Port William with his mother and father, Nancy and Ben Feltner. It is a rather small town with shops, a cemetery and a school. Despite being a small town, there is a lot of violence in the streets. "Sometimes violence would break out in one of the saloons or in the road" (Page 1. l. 19) They get paid on Saturdays, and therefore there are many who get drunk, and this often results in fights. One Saturday afternoon, where Mat and his mother Nancy sit on the porch, a wounded man approaches them. Nancy takes care of the wounded man and helps him and his friends.

This short story is narrated by a third person narrator and it is written in the past tense. One must assume that Matt is an adult now, looking back on his childhood.

Mat is a boy of 5 years. He is a very adventurous boy and therefore he is very curious. He is being held at home by his mother, who seems to be overprotictive of him. He can not get out, so he is not aware of what is happening out on the 'other side'. He is however eager to experience the unknown. Mat is also very fearless in relation to him only being 5 years old. Despite his fearlessness, his mother puts him in dresses, making him look even more like a child. Nancy Fields is the mother of Matt. She is very overprotective of him. However, it...
