Nathaniel Hawthorne used the theme of hypocrisy within his book masterfully. It was the dominant theme of the book and was expressed through many different medians. The theme of hypocrisy also had a very apparent affect on many of the characters. He used this theme to help us better understand this human fault.

He revealed the main theme of hypocrisy in many different ways. One of the ways he revealed this theme was through Dimmesdale. Dimmesdale was a preacher who committed adultery and at first didn't confuse denying any accusations that would come his way and say that any thing he did was "Between him and god." It is my belief that this was the main way he expressed his theme of hypocrisy through characters. The actions taken by different people where also and outlet of this theme. Once again Dimmesdale comes to mind. He would go out and preach his heart out and then go home and continue to defy his godly laws.

Then the actions of Chillingworth where very hypocritical he did nothing to punish Hester but Dimmesdale got the full of his wrath for the same sin. He himself was a sinner to he would say one thing then do the other.

This Hypocrisy that was over-running the people of this town was affecting everyone in different ways. For example, Dimmesdale who was one of the biggest hypocrites in this novel was delivering his best sermons while acting in a hypocritical way. He was also affected by his change in lifestyle, which included unnecessary fasting and craving A's into his chest. Chillingworth was driven mad by his constant double standards and his wavering sense of judgment.
