In statistical research, one major element that exists is the hypothesis. A hypothesis consists a proposition, or set of propositions, set forth as an explanation for the occurrence of some specified group of phenomena, either asserted merely as a provisional conjecture to guide investigation (working hypothesis) or accepted as highly probable in the light of established facts (Dictionary.com, 2007). In reviewing the article titled, "Opinions on employee satisfaction/dissatisfaction in the Information System Services Division (ISS) at Company XYZ," the study focuses on employee satisfaction in a financial mortgage firm. The purpose of the study was to identify the reason for the increased turnover rate in ISS. A 52 question survey was created and distributed to a sample population of 588 employees who responded to survey anonymously.

The study was based on the research hypothesis, "Given a series of questions on job satisfaction about recruiting and staffing, career development, feedback and rewards, direction and communications, and management effectiveness, employees will rate their perceptions on their overall satisfaction/dissatisfaction in these areas" (Williams, 1994).

Each area was then divided into a null hypothesis and an alternate hypothesis. The null hypothesis focuses on a statement about the population while the alternate hypothesis is the statement accepted when the null hypothesis is rejected. The null hypothesis in this research study focused on proving or disproving stated that no difference existed in the ISS distribution of satisfied and unsatisfied employees with opinions on the areas discussed in the research hypothesis. The alternate hypothesis in this research study focused on providing or disproving stated that there is a difference in the ISS distribution of satisfied and unsatisfied employees with opinions on the areas discussed in the research hypothesis.
