Identity theft is becoming a very big problem in the United States. Identity theft can occur through the internet, telephone, receipts, and credit card statements. This information is also becoming more readily available through the growing technology. The perpetrators can find the information in your garbage, hacking into your computer and many of other ways. There are ways to prevent identity theft by taking precautions like shredding receipts that have account numbers on them, do not put your credit card numbers on unsecured sites and be cautious to who you give your social security number to. The government is also making new law to protect against theft and harsher punishment for those who commit theft.

As identity theft is on the rise individuals and the government must combine their resources to stop it. As mention above there are ways to protect your self. These steps are the easiest and simplest ways to protect your self.

Failure to practice these behaviors will open you up to identity theft. The government is also getting involved to stop identity theft. It is hard to keep up with technology that is available to everyone. As identity theft grows, more laws are made to protect the individuals and harsher sentencing to deter future criminals.

In conclusion, the first step us to protect your self. Laws in place to protect you are not sure solutions because people break laws every day. It is very important that you are not careless with receipts, report stolen cards immediately, be careful with your social security number and all of your personal information. As you do your part the government is using its recourses to intercept the criminals. We have a long way before we can put an end to identity theft, but we are on the right track...
