INTRODUCTION Asbestos 'toxicity was discovered in 1906 and which was classified as carcinogenic by the social security system in 1946, even before it had been extensively used during the 1945-75 period' (www.eiro.eurofound.ie). However the naturally occurring fibrous material was used on a large scale in commercial and industrial application due to its unique properties of being resistant to abrasion, inert to acid and alkaline solutions, and stable at high temperatures.
