When CSR is discussed in policycircles, academia, the media, and wider civil society, the focus always on the largestcompanies. Small and medium sized enterprises (SME) are often overlooked. The question isdo Small & Medium Enterprises participate in CSR?CSR involves voluntary initiatives by enterprises, which go beyond compliance with law.

Allthis while it has been on voluntary effort. If the number of SME participation is in at verylow level, shall we impose a regulation & legislation to get SME into CSR?The awareness of CSR may be is still not up to a satisfactory level. Some know about CSRbut do not fully understand the concepts of CSR. In fact SME may have been doing CSRwithout knowing.

CSR mainly has 4 focal areas - the environmental, workplace, marketplace & community.

Environmental is mainly on reducing impact on environment while conducting business.

Providing a conductive & dynamic workplace, respect human right & human capitaldevelopment is essential in workplace CSR. Marketplace responsibility is how a companyconducts their business with customers & suppliers, another 2 key stakeholders.
