From meager beginnings, the Coca Cola Company has struggled to bring their unique drink to the masses. It all began in 1886 when Dr. John S. Pemberton invented the syrup for Coca Cola in Atlanta, Georgia. He then proceeded to carry this invention down the street to a local pharmacy where it was tested and sold for five cents a glass (Birth of a Refreshing Idea, n.d. para, 1). Carbonated water was later added to the syrup and a label that defined the fountain drink as "Delicious and Refreshing" (Birth of a Refreshing Idea, n.d., para, 1). The name of the drink was decided with advertisement of the product in mind. According to Birth of a Refreshing Idea on the Coca Cola Web site, the partnership of John Pemberton and Frank Robinson coined the name Coca Cola as they thought, "the two Cs would look good well advertising" (para, 2).

This same script decided on in the early stages of product development is the same well-known trademark that is used today. However, the destiny of this now famous product did not lie with its creator. The Coca Cola Company was formed in 1891 after Asa Candler bought the remaining interest in Coca Cola from Dr. Pemberton (The Candler Era, n.d., para 1). Mr. Candler's business savvy was used to boost sales of the product by distributing coupons for a complimentary glass of the fountain drink. Mr. Candler also saw that the trademark name was patented in 1893 (The Candler Era, n.d., para, 2). Under Mr. Candler's watchful eye, the Coca Cola Company blossomed. Only three years after the forming the corporation it could boast that, according to The Candler Era on the Coca Cola Web site, "Coca-Cola is now drunk in every state and territory in the United States"...
