In the New Testament of the Bible, Jesus Christ teaches many lessonsin the form of parables or short stories. Teaching in parables allowed Jesusto provide examples of his lessons that his audience could relate to. Jesustaught on many topics using parables including how to get to Heaven, earthlyrelationships, and finances. According to bibletexts.com, "He (Jesus) usedhis parables to make his hearers think. He challenged them to a new visionof God's rule that always radically turned up-side down the common views --whether religious, cultural, ethnic, and/or social views. Jesus' parablesencouraged his hearers not simply to think outside of the box. They declaredthat there is no box -- only God's unconditionally compassionate,all-powerful, just, and wisely governed reign over all." One of the mostmemorable parables taught on financial trustworthiness and stewardship isthe parable of the talents. This parable teaches about the importance ofbeing good stewards of the resources we are given by God.

It also teachesabout the importance of using our God-given gifts to further the Kingdom ofHeaven in order to be considered "good and faithful servants."The parable of the talents can be found in the New Testament Gospel ofMatthew 25: 14-30.

14"Again, it will be like a man going on a journey, who called hisservants and entrusted his property to them. 15To one he gave five talentsof money, to another two talents, and to another one talent, each accordingto his ability. Then he went on his journey. 16The man who had received thefive talents went at once and put his money to work and gained five more.

17So also, the one with the two talents gained two more. 18But the man whohad received the one talent went off, dug a hole in the ground and hid hismaster's money. 19"After a long time the master of those servants returnedand settled accounts with them.
