John Proctor

John Proctor is one of the main characters in Arthur Miller's Crucible in the small town of Salem, Massachusetts. It discusses the madness of witchcraft in this town. John is a liar because he lies to his wife Elizabeth by not telling her he had an affair with Abigail Williams. Proctor is courageous because he admitted to his affair with Abigail in order to be honest to Elizabeth. Proctor was also very brave for trying to save his wife from being hanged. Proctor presents various personality traits as the play progresses, but however at the end he emerges as a strong character who is essentially "good" and who is forgiven and forgives himself for his adultery with Abigail William's. Proctor is even tempered and does not support any party such as Reverend Parris and the town's church. John Proctor has many personalities. He lies; he is even tempered and is yet very courageous throughout the play.

In act one Proctor has an affair with Abigail Williams and does not tell his wife. Proctor tries to lie and hide his relationship with Abigail Williams but he could not. Proctor did not only commit adultery by having an affair with Abigail Williams, but his religious community does not accept what he has done. He also took advantage of a servant that he employed and abused the trust as an employer and his wife lost all trust in him. Proctor feels guilty about his relationship with Abigail. When he is visited by Hale and asked about his commitment to the church his knowledge of the Ten Commandments is not very good.
