Intolerace and injustice are the greatest evil. From this it follows that certain ways of acting are unacceptable. This is shown in "To Kill a Mocking Bird", as it taught Jem and Scout a lesson about discrimination and no to judge others on their appearance, but instead what they do to others.

"Mocking birds don't do anything ...but sing their hearts out for us" This is said by Miss Maudie.

This is the theme of the book and it refers to the characters. In this case Tom Robinson and Boo Radley symbolises the mocking bird. Tom is convited of a crime he didn't commit, but Bob Ewell points the finger at him. Boo is locked up in his own room for thirty years and to put him in trial when he's not used to public attention would kill him. This is the quote Scout said " Well it'd sort of being like shootin' a mocking bird wouldn't it?" We are first introduced to the mocking bird image when Uncle Jack came to visit Atticus and gives them air-rifles " Shoot all the blue jays you want...it's

a sin to kill a mocking bird".

Atticuz says this quote, as he doesn' want to harm the good or defenceless. At this point Scout doesn't understand what he's talking about.

The last person to use the mocking bird image is Scout, while at trial. This tells us over the time of the book Scout has matured and understands more about compassion and not to hold judgment and otherstanding others.

"Well it'd of sort of like....wouldn't it?" Therefore it shows us that every one in society is equal, and it's wrong to sterotype.

"You never really understand....and walk around in it"
