As soon as I met the family, I knew the job that needed to be done. I knew I could be happy with the new Anse I had created. It was as if the polished hair and the white teeth made him a different person. The first time I laid eyes on him was when he first started to hang around Addie. Around town, everyone knew he didn't belong. I use to be a teacher at the same school with Addie, and me and her always talked about how much we could change that man. That Addie always thought she could make an impact on someone. I reckon I can do the job better than her. Who was she kidding! When I had seen Anse once again after several years, he seemed worse off than he was before. He stunk like decaying animal meat and looked mighty disheveled. I knew there had to be something done to change that man.

And now here the family sat in the wagon with their confused, stupefied faces.

"It's Cash and Jewel and Vardaman and Dewey Dell," Anse says. "Meet Mrs. Bundren." Jewel looked up at Anse with contempt as Cash and the others just sat there not really saying much. Vardaman with banana pieces shoved in his mouth looked at me with a confused look on his face.

"My mother is a fish." I had to laugh watching Vardaman trying to shove those bananas down his throat. It was as if he had never had a banana before. By the looks of this family, I could see Addie had done a poor job.

"But little Vardaman, I'm your new mother, and I am not no fish." He just stood there with that same stupefied look. Jewel stared at me with dark unmoving eyes...
