(Sutton 1) Germany had just conceded to several territories and had signed the Treaty of Versailles. ("Great Depression" 1) This country had just lost all the money they had gained since the end of World War I and the United States ended the loans that they had extended to Germany. They were soon joined by the Van Pels and Friz Pfeffer. ("The Diary of Anne Frank: The Critical Edition" 15) Those eight people lived together until the police found them out on August 4th, 1944.
