What is life without dreams and dreaming? We go throughout our whole lives dreaming about what we want our futures to be like or what we want in life. We make dream up new dreams every day. We never know where our dreams may take us, or what dreams we will follow. We have many dreams that we wish to come true, but unfortunately, many of those dreams are put to the side and left unforgotten for more realistic things in life. Eventually, you look at what you have accomplished and think about what might have been if you followed your dream. Or if you followed your dreams, you may reflect on what it would it have been like if you did not follow your dreams. In Langston Hughes' poem, "Harlem", Hughes writes about what happens to a dream deferred. Through the use of symbolism and imagery, Hughes creates vivid images and tells what happens to a dying dream.

"What happens to a dream deferred?" (Hughes 1). A dream deferred is a dream that is put off to the side and left there while other dreams are made and other dreams are being accomplished. "Does it dry up like a raisin in the sun?" (Hughes 2). What Hughes means is that the dream is left there to sit and dry up and become smaller and smaller as time goes on, just like a raisin left sitting in the hot sun on a warm day. A dream dries out and becomes smaller as it sits untouched in the back of one's mind for one's entire life.
