M.J on the Fight

Marijuana is a very controversial issue in our society today. Many people are against the legalization of marijuana due to the skewed perception of someone who smokes it. Others are in favor of legalization due to its benefits. Others don't really care or don't have an opinion on whether it should be legal or illegal. I believe that marijuana should be legalized for all uses.

One belief for the legalization of marijuana is that it would have economic relief. This topic has been brought up many times for its pros. Becoming a pot nation won't get America to recover economically, but will help America get out of a hole..America would benefit from it instead of getting harmed by it. The regulation of the marijuana would bring money into states and ultimately the nation. In the article Legalizing marijuana can reduce crime, increase revenue for state, author Madeline Wolff says that "Already earning California about $14 billion a year, it has been estimated that legalizing marijuana could generate anywhere between $1.5

and $4 billion (from taxing the drug) in revenue for California, a boost that we most undeniably need" (Wolff). The legalization of marijuana would help out the nation drastically. California is a primary example on how it helps the economy. Marijuana being illegal in California still brings in $14 billion medically and legalizing it could bring a total of $18 billion a year. "Governments could collect about $8.7 billion annually in revenue if marijuana was "taxed at rates comparable to those on alcohol and tobacco" (Solomon).
