Act 1 Scene 1: Three witches are gathered in an open place in a thunder storm. They agree to reassemble on the moorland before sunset to meet Macbeth.

Act 1 Scene 2: Duncan, King of Scotland, with his two sons, Malcolm and Donalbain is in an army camp receiving news of the battles fought against him by an alliance of Sweno, King of Norway, Macdonwald, Lord of the Western Isles of Scotland, and the Thane of Cawdor who has proved to be disloyal to King Duncan. The reports all stress the heroism of Macbeth (eg "For brave Macbeth - well he deserves that name" - Line 16), who is one of Duncan's generals, in ensuring a victory for the King.

Duncan announces that Macbeth is to be given the title of Thane of Cawdor. Cawdor is to be executed immediately.
