Management PlanningPlanning is "[t]he management function of systematically making decisions about the goals and activities that an individual, a group, a work unit, or the overall organization will pursue"( Bateman & Snell, 2009, p. 19). By planning, management focuses on delivering strategic values that give an organization a competitive advantage. TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® is a service-oriented company that specializes in business and residential moving services with a strong emphasis on customer service.

External Impacts on PlanningAt TWO MEN AND A TRUCK®, the strategic planning for the operating organization has been completed. The company has a long-term goal, and strives to achieve its mission in its day-to-day as well as yearly operations. However, because multiple TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® franchises exist, each franchise has to deal with a different environment, and the individual franchise will have different needs.

Legal IssuesTWO MEN AND A TRUCK® is a service-oriented company that is owned and operated in the United States, and must follow and comply with all federal and state regulations.

Whenever there's a change in state legislature, the effects of that change must be communicated down the chain of command and the appropriate response must be made. This affects a manager's planning process by not only modifying existing procedures, but also in communicating the new changes to the employees.

For example, moving companies can not disassemble infant cribs in the State of Wisconsin because there has been a law or regulation that has been passes to disallow anyone other than the consumer to disassemble or reassemble an infant crib. When this type of situation arises, a manager must convey this information to the customer service representatives to alert future customers with infants that they must disassemble and reassemble their own cribs.
