Management Planning

What is planning?

"Planning is the conscious, systematic process of making decisions about goals and activities that an individual, group, work unit, or organization will pursue in the future." (Bateman / Snell, 2004, Management: The New Competitive Landscape, 6e)

In the organization where this student works for, CEO provided both a strategic planning, which is a long term planning and a tactical, operational planning, which is a short to mid-term planning.

Establishment of Mission, Vision and Goals

Why is this organization here to do a business?

The organization has a motto, which is "Customer First". A founder, and also a president of the parent company of the organization always tells all of his employees that he started the business in order to fulfill his customers' satisfaction. It has been fifteen years and the business has grown to have nearly five hundred employees. The student works for his U.S.

subsidiary, which started the business in Southern California in the year of 2002.

When this student started working for this organization, she learned the history of this parent company and she was excited to be a part of the team.

However, this branch operation did not seem to provide the goals as the branch operation. The branch manager at that time explained that he needed all of employees, which was total of four, to earn $10,000 sales monthly. He also explained that he would not care how each of employees earns this amount, all he needed was to see the sales increase.

This kind of leadership can cause the ethics issue. The company's mission is "Customer First", but his goal is "Sales amount First" without the direction where this local operation would go.
