The Masterminds of Art

The artists I have chosen for my research paper are Leonardo da Vinci and Michelangelo Buonarroti. The period the two artists lived in was the Renaissance period. The term Renaissance means "rebirth". Many things were reborn during this time period, but we are going to discuss art. For my first question, where did you both study art and how has it influenced your work? Leonardo responded, "When I was 15, my father apprenticed me to a renowned artist, Andrea Del Verrocchio, in Florence." Even at a young age, Leonardo displayed amazing talent. By the time he was in his early thirties, he was out shining his mentor. Then Michelangelo responded with, "I have received my formal education from the painter Domenico Ghirlandaio and the sculptor Bartholdi di Giovanni who lived in Florence as well. However, I was only an apprentice for one year, and then I went to stay with the sculptor Bartholdi di Giovanni.

While staying there, I was given access to a collection of Ancient Roman art by the ruler of Florence." While in Florence, Michelangelo becomes acquainted with the classical art, which had enormous influence in his work. This is where Leonardo da Vinci and Michelangelo Buonarroti both studied art and what influenced their designs.

For my next question, how are you, Michelangelo and you, Leonardo da Vinci alike and how are you different? Leonardo replied first by saying, "We are alike in the sense that we are both Italian and lived in Florence. Both of us apprenticed to talented artists of our time and are polymaths, meaning we are both knowledgeable about many different fields of study. This includes; being a painter, sculptor, architect, engineer, as well as an inventor (Biography.com, 2011). However, Michelangelo is a very accomplished painter, sculptor, architect,
