DESCRIBE THE EMERGING TECHNOLOGY This emerging technology is a mp3 player. A mp3 player allows you to download your favourite music off the Internet and save them onto the memory of your mp3 player. The MP3 format is a compression system for music. This format helps to reduce the number of bytes in a song, without reducing the quality of the song's sound. The goal of the MP3 format is to compress a CD-quality song by a factor of 10 to 14, without losing the CD sound quality. A 32 megabyte (MB) song on a CD compresses down to about 3 MB on MP3. This means you download a song off the Internet in minutes rather than hours, and you can store a whole cd of songs on an MP3 player using a relatively small amount of memory.

Although the MP3 player is an emerging technology, none of the internal components are new technology.

By combining existing components in a new way the MP3 player was created.

A MP3 player is pretty simple and this is how it works 1. Pull the song from memory byte by byte 2. Decompress the MP3 encoding 3. Run the decompressed bytes through a digital-to-analog converter 4. Amplify the analog signal so you can hear it.

The main difference between a portable CD player and an MP3 player is that the CD contains the bytes instead of memory, and on a CD the bytes are already decompressed so no decompression is needed. Also the portable CD player has internal parts that move where the MP3 player doesn't. This means MP3 players will not skip when the are shaken.
