Musical Catullus Assignment Analysis

The poem is of the classical poet, Catullus, have been demonstrated to affect lyricist of today. In our Cambridge Latin Course Unit 4 books in Stage 45, some of the poems he has dedicated for his lover, Clodia, share common themes with songs we listen to everyday. In the poems, Catullus refers to Clodia as Lesbia, many believe that this was a humble homage to Sappho, who came from the isle of Lesbos. Others believe that the name change was because if the name was Lesbia, his poems are easier to scan.

The first poem is placed on page 200, and the theme of the poem is love at first sight. The first song that happen to come to my mind, was "Sugar, We're Going Down" by Fall Out Boy.

The band hardly ever explains the meanings to their lyrics, and so any interpretations goes. The part of the song, "Am I more then you bargained for yet?", could be interpreted as, is he what you did not expect him to be? Accordingly to the poem I see this as a attack towards Metellus, Clodia's husband. The next part of the song that caught my attention towards the poem was, "lies in the grass, next to the mausoleum" the word, "lies" is not misspelled, the actual lyrics spell it out that way, referring to her lies. His foreshadows the lies Catullus is told by Lesbia. "I'm just a notch at your bedpost, but your just a line in a song" this can be interpreted that Clodia, does not care much for Catullus but in later poems he...
