ÃÂÃÂMutliculturalism and Gendered CitizenshipÃÂÃÂ which is the fourth chapter from Seyla BenhabibÃÂÃÂs book ÃÂÃÂThe Claims of Culture Equality and diversity in the Global EraÃÂÃÂ. In her book she analyzes the legal pluralism, cultural politics, the status of women and children and subjects related to these main topics. In the fourth chapter she explains the role of women in societies, why they are associated with those roles, the private sphere in peopleÃÂÃÂs lives and cultural defense in law. She claims that cultures are not monolithic wholes and close to internal change and transformation.
According to Benhabib status of women, children, marriage, sex and death have a certain special place in intercultural perceptions. She draws attention to one of the earliest instances of complex multicultural dialogue about the status of women and children which was between Socrates, Plato and Aristotle. The case of women even if they are bartered or married with is kind of a victory among the opposite sex or at least it is worth to discuss about.
In this chapter there is a list about the things that lead to the clashes of intercultural evaluations which is written by Bhikhu Parekh. The list consists of twelve practices. Seven of them are about the status of women, two are on dress codes of both sexes, another two are about education of children, only one of these practices is about dietary codes and funeral rites. I think it definitely illustrates the fact that women and children most commonly bring about the clashes in inter cultural sphere.
