Nationalism is the most successful ideology in human history. In the two centuries since its first formulation in the writings of European philosophers, it has caused the political map of the world to be completely redrawn. It is a very important topic because it lets people relate to a particular state and also gives them a sense of national pride. Webster's dictionary defines nationalism as loyalty and devotion to a nation; especially : a sense of national consciousness exalting one nation above all others and placing primary emphasis on promotion of its culture and interests as opposed to those of other nations or supranational groups. Governments everywhere have to sometimes deal with certain situations when there is too much support for nationalism. But nationalism sometimes helps people of many different nations relate and try to come together in order to achieve a better life. Nationalism is a hotly debated topic among governments and people alike as each group has certain ideas on nationalism should be brought about.

There are different sides to the nationalism debate and the points and ideas of that each side make can have an impact on public lives. The effects of nationalism has been seen and the repercussions can also be seen as they have had an effect in policy makings and government decisions

In the words of George Orwell, "Nationalism is not to be confused with patriotism. Nationalism is inseparable from the desire for power. The abiding purpose of every nationalist is to secure more power and more prestige, not for himself but for the nation or other unit in which he has chosen to sink his own individuality."
