INTRODUCTION

Maritime and Port Services, MPS Ghana Limited is a Shipping Agency involved in the provision of transport and logistic services in Ghana. The activities of the company include Vessels Husbanding, Sea and Air Freight Forwarding, Trucking and Warehousing Services among others. This report will focus on the Vessel husbanding operations of the Company which is the core business of the company.

The company handles MELDAS Vessels that call the sea ports of Ghana, that is the Tema and Takoradi ports. Averagely, 12 vessels call at the Tema port and 4 at the Takoradi port monthly. Total calls for 2006 were 145 and 45 for Tema and Takoradi ports respectively. MPS serves as the local representative of the Vessel operator (MELDAS) in Ghana.

The stevedoring of the vessels is carried out by specialist stevedore companies appointed by the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GPHA).

The company as a ship agent seeks to ensure the vessels are efficiently handled at a minimum cost to the Vessel Operator. This means the turn around time of the vessel must be short, for the longer a vessel stays in port, the more port expenses are incurred by the operator. The company makes available the staff and equipment in the form of computers, office area for the provision of the service.
