The play, Othello, by William Shakespeare, is a tragedy with many elements. The main characters of the play are Othello and Iago. Othello is a Moorish general in the Venetian army, and Iago is his ensign. Iago expected to be appointed as Othello's lieutenant; however, Othello appointed another man, Cassio. Cassio had no military experience and had only learned about the military through books. Because of this, Iago hates Othello and plots against him. Due to Iago's villainous plan, Othello's wife, Desdemona, is killed by Othello. Based on evidence Iago gave him, Othello believes she has been unfaithful. Iago also stabbed both his wife, Emilia, and his pawn named Roderigo. The play is an in depth tale of love and deception.

Shakespeare has a very unique style, and he is without a doubt one of the most highly esteemed writers of all time. This play is a true tragedy, which Shakespeare masterfully created.

Shakespeare's tragedies are true tragedies in which most of the characters die by unfortunate means. Shakespeare uses a very complex writing style. He uses many literary techniques. There are many soliloquies in the play to help the audience understand a character's motivation and thoughts. Both Iago and Othello have very important soliloquies that reveal detailed information. That is why the audience knows so much about Iago's plot. The information that the reader knows, that the characters do not, is called dramatic irony. Shakespeare also employs another type of irony, which is verbal irony. A perfect example is when Iago tricks Cassio into joining a plan that will harm him. Iago tells him "I protest, in the sincerity of love and honest kindness." This is an exact contradictory of what he is actually doing. Iago is lying and only wants to harm Cassio. This is...
