Oxycontin A Cursed Cure

A certain prescription drug by the name of Oxycontin was introduced in 1996 as a breakthrough for the treatment of severe chronic pain. The drug has become a problem in recent years, after abusers discovered that crushing the time - release tablets and snorting or injecting the powder gives an immediate, heroin - like high. The drug has been the cause in more than 1000 deaths nationwide.

Prescription painkillers such as oxycontin now rank second to marijuana as the most - abused drug in the country, according to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Administration. These findings are what lead me to do a research project on narcotics and other prescription drugs, and the affects they have on today's youth.

Upon doing my research project on narcotics and other prescription drugs, I have found some very conclusive results. I handed out 25 surveys to the High School students with a hypothesis that asked " Do you think narcotics or other prescription drugs influence today's young adults by affecting their educational and social abilities in the future? " After completion of the surveys, I compiled the answers, assessed them into bar graphs, and tabulated the results.

The results were astonishing. I found that 15 out of 25 young adults had used narcotics or other prescription type drugs at least 15 - 20 times in a year's period. Even worse 5 out of 15 could not even count how many times during the year they had used the drugs. After reading these results, I decided to go further with my research. I then chose to investigate the SAMHSA website in depth to see if this cause has been studied or determined by another resource.
