HERITAGE DAY CELEBRATIONS AT MAROPENG
The Gauteng Provincial Government will be having its annual Heritage Day celebrations on the 24th of September at Maropeng in the Cradle of Humankind.
Maropeng is situated ten kilometres from the Sterkfontein caves, and the name Maropeng comes from the Setswana language, meaning 'the place where we once lived'. The centre was created in an effort to encourage both children and tourists to discover the rich fossil heritage of the area.
Because the centre is a means by which one can learn about their heritage, it is the ideal site for Heritage Day celebrations. The theme of this year's celebrations is 'Celebrating our music, Our Heritage from Kwela to Kwaito', and this theme was chosen to honour the use of music as a tool during the struggle for political freedom before the onset of democracy in South Africa.

The Gauteng Provincial Government will host the day's proceedings in partnership with the West Rand Municipality, and the public is invited to join the day's celebrations from nine am.
