Career success can be affected in a number of ways, sometimes for the better and sometimes for the worse. Developing one's knowledge base and refining one's abilities can impact career success for the better. This paper will cover how these actions can affect the desired result and what a person can do to increase their skills beyond getting a college education.


Professional Associations

There are many organizations and professional associations in existence which influence my field. Choosing one of them to highlight isn't an easy task and should in no way confer a greater level of importance of any one over the others. With that in mind, I've chosen the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME).

The ASME started out in 1880 as an organization built around the field of mechanical engineering, but today incorporates other fields of engineering as well.

The ASME is a professional organization that facilitates collaboration, knowledge sharing, and skill development across multiple engineering disciplines, while promoting the vital role of engineering in society (, 2008). ASME codes and standards, publications, conferences, continuing education and professional development programs provide a foundation for advancing technical knowledge and a safer world.

ASME membership can be important to my career because it provides me with the tools to build my skills, expand my influence, and enables me to gain a competitive advantage. It keeps me up to date on boiler and pressure vessel codes, educates members and non-members about licenses and certifications needed for working in the mechanical engineering industry, and offers links to test prep sites for obtaining Professional Engineers' licenses as well as information regarding the body of knowledge...
